Serving Like Jesus: Portland Tidechanger's First Community Service Project

Updated: Dec 12

At Majesty Outdoors, we believe that mentorship is more than just teaching, it’s about modeling the values and behaviors that can change a generation. The Portland Tidechangers Chapter recently embraced this belief in a powerful way through their very first community service project: serving the Portland Fire Department.

A Mission to Bridge and Heal

When Portland Chapter Leader Marcela first envisioned this project, her goal was simple yet profound: to help our Tidechangers see public servants not just as the people who show up during emergencies, but as neighbors, friends, and heroes.

For many of our kids, interactions with public servants have been tied to difficult or even traumatic moments. Marcela’s hope was to give them a fresh perspective and build a bridge of understanding. She wanted to spark healing and plant the seeds of servanthood, showing them what it truly means to serve like Jesus.

Mentoring Through Modeling

This project wasn’t just about serving others—it was about teaching the Tidechangers to think beyond themselves and embrace hard work for the benefit of others. Marcela emphasized that “mentoring is modeling,” and through this experience, the children saw firsthand the joy of helping others and the reward of hearing a heartfelt “thank you.”

Even more impactful, the Tidechangers witnessed their moms stepping up to serve alongside them, creating a beautiful example of teamwork, selflessness, and positive interaction.

A Warm Welcome from Portland Fire Department

When Marcela approached the Portland Fire Department about the project, she was met with an enthusiastic “yes!” Captain Willott and his crew welcomed the Tidechangers with open arms, making the experience unforgettable. They not only allowed the children to serve them but also took the time to engage with them, sharing stories, giving tours, and showing what it means to dedicate your life to others.

“I shared with Captain Willott all about who we are, what we do, and my hopes for this trip. He was incredibly helpful and willing to support us every step of the way,” Marcela Hernandez.

Looking Ahead

This community service project was just the beginning. Marcela’s next stop is the Portland Police Department, where she hopes to continue bridging gaps, fostering understanding, and modeling the values of servanthood and love.

Help Us Change a Generation

This project is a reminder that mentoring is about more than teaching skills, it’s about shaping hearts and minds. With your support, we can continue to create opportunities like this for our Tidechangers to grow, learn, and make a difference in their communities.
